Two teenagers were in critical condition Friday morning after their SUV traveled the wrong way on a Sumter County highway and they were struck by an oncoming vehicle.

The crash occurred on County Road 48 about 11:15 a.m.

According to a Florida Highway Patrol report, the 2001 Ford Explorer was traveling east in the westbound lanes and was hit on the right side by a 2001 Dodge Ram that had been going west.

The Explorer driver, Jakala Skelton, 18, of Floral City, and her passenger, Angel Banks, 16, as well as the Dodge driver, Lindsey Rawls, 27, of Bushnell, were taken to Ocala Regional Medical Center.

Rawls was listed in critical condition.

It’s not clear why Skelton was driving in the wrong lane. But Sgt. Steve Gaskins, FHP spokesman, said alcohol is not suspected. The crash remains under investigation.
