Fredericksburg, VA : A 28-year-old King George County man was killed on Thursday, August 10, 2017
A 28-year-old King George County man was killed Thursday morning when the bicycle he was riding collided with a vehicle, state police said.
Edward W. Abendroth, 28, was pronounced dead at the accident site.
According to state police spokeswoman Susan Rowland, the accident occurred about 11:10 a.m. on Windsor Drive in the Dahlgren area of King George, about a half mile west of U.S. 301.
The investigation revealed that Abendroth was pedaling west when a 2005 Dodge Caravan moved to pass him in a legal passing zone. As the driver attempted to pass, Rowland said, the cyclist appeared to veer into the Caravan’s path and was struck.
A helicopter was dispatched to transport the victim to a hospital but was called off before it arrived.
The Caravan driver, a 47-year-old Montross man, was not injured. Rowland said the crash remains under investigation but no charges are anticipated. Trooper J.L. Simone was the first responding officer.
According to his LinkedIn profile, Abendroth was a University of Maryland graduate who had worked at Dahlgren as a computer scientist for just over a year.
