A Chanute man died in a head-on double-fatality collision in Oklahoma Monday evening.
According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Matthew A Ray, 41, Chanute, was southbound on US-169 in Nowata County, Okla., in a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck. Ray’s vehicle crossed the center line and struck a northbound 2003 Nissan Maxima driven by Barbara A Stewart, 37, Nowata.
Both drivers were pinned in their vehicles for more than 30 minutes and had to be extricated by the Nowata Fire Department. Both Ray and Stewart were pronounced dead at the scene “due to massive injuries sustained” in the head-on crash, according to the OHP report.
The report states that conditions were dry and clear at the time of the accident, approximately 9:20 pm. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts and airbags deployed in both vehicles.
The accident is still under investigation.
