Seminole, FL : Woman, father fatally struck by wrong-way driver in Seminole on Thursday, December 25, 2014
Two Largo residents were killed early Christmas morning in a wrong-way crash in Seminole.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash happened just after midnight at the intersection of 131st Street North and Park Boulevard.
Troopers said a Ford Explorer driven by a 51-year-old man was traveling westbound on Park Boulevard in the eastbound lanes when it came into the intersection.
The Explorer crashed head on into an eastbound Hyundai Sonata in the intersection. Another eastbound vehicle, also a Hyundai sedan, hit the left side of the Sonata in front of it and then collided head on with the Explorer.
The driver of the Sonata, 58-year-old Isabel Martins, died at the scene. Her father-in-law, Joao Martins, 84, a passenger in the Sonata, died about an hour after the crash at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg. His wife, 82-year-old Arminda C. Martins, suffered critical injuries and remains at Bayfront Health St. Petersburg.
Isabel Martins' son, Matthew John Martins, 23, was driving the second Hyundai. He suffered minor injuries.
The Ford Explorer driver suffered minor injuries. According to troopers, the driver is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol.
The roadway was closed until almost 7 a.m.
The case remains under investigation and it is unknown exactly where the driver of the Explorer began traveling in the wrong direction.
According to FHP, charges are pending the conclusion of the investigation.
