MOFFAT ,TX : Authorities identify man killed in collision near Moffat on July, Monday 3rd 2017
A 78-year-old man was killed in an accident Monday morning on State Highway 317 and East Payne Branch Road about three miles south of Moody.
Maynard Necessary of Valley Mills was pronounced dead at the scene by Bell County Justice of the Peace G.W. Ivey, Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Dave Roberts said.
The accident between an 18-wheeler and a 2014 Ford Fiesta was reported at 7:53 a.m.
The driver of the 18-wheeler was transported to Scott & White Medical Center-Temple, Moffat Fire Chief Brian Falkenberg said.
The only occupant of the 18-wheeler was Cedric Smith, 57, of Houston, and he wasn’t injured, Roberts said.
The accident report said that the Fiesta was southbound on SH 317 when it left the road. The driver tried to regain control but overcorrected into the northbound lane and crashed head on into the northbound 18-wheeler.
No charges are pending.
The road was closed between Shine Branch Road and the Bell County/McLennan County line for almost seven hours while accident crews reconstructed the crash and cleaned up the scene, which included a load of lumber that tumbled like dominoes from the flatbed trailer of the 18-wheeler.
Diesel fuel spilled when the saddle tank on the 18-wheeler was punctured in the accident, so Grone’s Environmental Services was called to clean up the area, Falkenberg said.
SH 317 opened back up just before 3 p.m., but Temple Towing remained on the scene to pick up the lumber.
Matt Jarma, Temple Towing operator, said at 4:30 p.m. that Temple Towing expected to be on the scene for a few more hours.
Responding to the scene were the Moffat Volunteer Fire Department, Temple Fire & Rescue, Scott & White EMS and numerous DPS troopers, Temple Fire & Rescue spokesman Thomas Pechal said.
In light of this tragic loss, the DPS would like to remind motorists to heed warning signs in construction zones and adjust their speed accordingly, Roberts said.
