A 37-year-old Lawrence woman was hospitalized Saturday after her vehicle struck a bridge pillar underneath Interstate 70 in Douglas County. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, Melissa Ann Monroe was driving northbound on U.S. Highway 40 when she veered off the road to the west and struck the pillar underneath the interstate. The car then rolled before coming to rest on its side. Stormont Vail Healthcare in Topeka said Sunday afternoon Monroe is in fair condition. The crash occurred at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, according to KHP. A reason for what caused the car to leave the roadway was not available Sunday.
