A 16-year-old Pahala girl has died after a single-vehicle crash on Highway 11 on Hawaii's Big Island.

The Hawaii Police Department identified the victim as a passenger Leiani Camba-Penera, who was pronounced dead at Hilo Medical Center shortly after 4 a.m. Thursday.

West Hawaii Today (http://is.gd/3mkQGW) reports the crash occurred Wednesday night after the 18-year-old driver reportedly fell asleep and his pickup truck struck a utility pole near Kapapala Ranch in Kau.

Authorities say the Naalehu man was ambulatory at the scene and also was transported to the Hilo hospital for treatment of injuries.

According to police, Camba-Penera was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the truck.

Authorities say a negligent homicide investigation has been initiated.
