The 7-year-old son of a Volusia County deputy was seriously injured Saturday after crashing a go-cart on the sheriff's driver's training course, officials said.
Deputy Kristina Welsh and her family were on the property at State Road 44 and Grand Avenue while she was off duty, officials said.
The boy was driving the go-cart around 2:30 p.m.when he lost control and flipped over. He was airlifted to Arnold Palmer hospital in Orlando where he was listed in serious condition.
Sheriff's spokesman Gary Davidson said the property is a track used for driver's training for deputies.
"We've initiated a supervisory inquiry to determine the facts and circumstances and what Deputy Welsh was doing at the site with her family," Davidson said.
The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
