Gloucester, MA : Two people were injured after vehicle slammed into a house on East Main Street at Cripple Cove on Thurssday ,April 21st, 2016
Gloucester, Massachusetts
A 38-year-old Gloucester man has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation, leaving the scene of a crash and other offenses after the truck he was driving early Thursday morning slammed into a house on East Main Street, sending him and a passenger to Addison Gilbert Hospital.
Joel McKinnon of 2 Stanwood Terrace was charged after Patrolmen Robert Morrissey and Josiah Aberle found him walking alongside the road near Cripple Cove after his truck crashed into and damaged a house at 40 E. Main St.
Witnesses told police that, after the crash, McKinnon backed the truck out of the house and exited the vehicle, leaving his injured passenger on the ground.
Both McKinnon and his passenger were transported by the Fire Department’s ambulance squad to Addison Gilbert, where the passenger was treated for a broken right hand, damaged teeth and a leg injury, according to Morrissey’s report. The report did not specify McKinnon’s injuries.
According to Morrissey’s report, a woman at the scene told police that she and the passenger had been at Pratty’s, and that, after they exited the bar, they began talking with a man later identified as McKinnon. McKinnoon asked if he could show them his “new truck,” the report states, and later asked them if they wanted to go for a ride.
The woman said both she and the man she was with asked McKinnon multiple times if he was “OK to drive,” adding that she works as a bartender and recognized signs that he was intoxicated. Yet the passenger got in the vehicle with McKinnon. The woman said she heard a loud crash from East Main Street moments later, and went to the scene, the report indicates.
Morrissey’s report indicates that McKinnon failed a number of field sobriety tests.
McKinnon is also charged with leaving the scene of a case of personal injury, speeding and failing to stay within marked lanes.
