Two officers were injured when a suspected drunken driver speeding at 70 miles per hour through city streets rear-ended their cruiser early Monday morning, according to the Albuquerque Police Department.APD posted on its Facebook page that the two officers were going to assist another officer with a stolen vehicle near Menaul and Princeton NE when 42-year-old Gerald Martinez plowed into them. The officers, whose names were not released, were in the same cruiser and were pulling out of a parking lot onto Menaul when Martinez crashed into them, according to police.
They were taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital with minor injuries and released from the hospital later in the day, according to officer Fred Duran, an APD spokesman.
Martinez was determined to have been driving while drunk, according to police. He was not injured.
“The drunk driver showed signs of being extremely intoxicated and was just over three times the legal limit,” according to the post.
Martinez is charged with aggravated DWI and was booked into the county jail on a $25,000 bond.
It’s not the first time he has been in trouble for driving drunk, according to APD.
Police say it was his fourth arrest for DWI, but no one by that name and date of birth could be found in online court records.
