Cape Elizabeth, ME : Cape Elizabeth High School student dies of injuries sustained in a car crash early Saturday, April 9, 2016

School officials say a Maine teen who was hospitalized following a single-car crash over the weekend in Cape Elizabeth has died.

The Portland Press Herald reports that Cape Elizabeth High School Principal Jeffrey Shedd emailed parents to inform them that 17-year-old Cole Amorello died Monday.

Police Chief Neil Williams says the 2006 BMW Amorello was behind the wheel of failed to a make a turn along a curve and crashed into some trees around 5 a.m. on Saturday. He says speed appeared to be a factor. The high school junior was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.

He was the only person involved in the crash.

The cause of the wreck remains under investigation.
