16-year-old was driver in crash that killed motherTennessee
Police have named the woman who was killed in a single-car crash in Hermitage Tuesday. Her 16-year-old son was the driver.Rodney Jones was driving on an intermediate restricted Tennessee driver’s license with his mother Meklit Melkie, 38, in the passenger seat according to a police statement.Reckless driving appears to have factored into the Tuesday night crash, police said. No charges have been filed at this point.
Witnesses told police a Nissan Maxima was speeding down Dodson Chapel Road when Jones passed a slower vehicle on a double yellow line. When Jones attempted to cross back into his lane, police said, he lost control./The Maxima hit a fence and a tree, police said. It spun before coming to rest in the middle of the road.Melkie was declared dead at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Jones was also taken to Vanderbilt with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, police said.
