A Warwick man died Monday afternoon after crashing his car into a bridge abutment on Interstate 84 in the Town of Wallkill, state police said.
David Newsome, 19, was driving westbound in a 2005 Honda Element at about 12:45 p.m. when he left the roadway for unknown reasons and struck the bridge abutment head-on, said Sgt. Eric Suarez of Troop F in the Town of Wallkill.
First responders initially called in a medical helicopter but soon canceled that request; Newsome was pronounced dead at the scene by the Orange County medical examiner, Suarez said.
No other cars were involved in the crash. Both westbound lanes were shut down for about 2 ½ hours, and traffic was backed up for several miles, Suarez said.
Suarez said it was too soon to speculate about the cause of the crash and said the investigation is ongoing.
