Authorities say four USC Upstate students have killed in a fiery wreck after a car lost control and hit a tree on a Spartanburg street not far from campus.
Troopers said the wreck happened around 1:45 a.m. Sunday on a street just north of Interstate 85 about a mile from campus.
The Highway Patrol says five people were inside the car when it went off the right side of the road, slammed into a tree and caught fire.
USC Upstate Chancellor Thomas Moore said in a statement the injured student was in stable condition. He says there are no words to describe the loss to the campus of 6,000 students.
USC Upstate plans a candlelight vigil Monday on campus.
