Mahomet, IL : Motorcyclist killed in a one-vehicle accident on Interstate 74 near Mahomet on Sunday afternoon, June 26, 2016

A motorcyclist was killed Sunday afternoon in a one-vehicle accident on Interstate 74 near Mahomet.

Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said Norman Lucas, 63, of Princeton was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident near mile marker 176. Northrup said Lucas was traveling west through a construction zone on the highway when he attempted to pass the vehicle in front of him, lost control of his motorcycle and left the road.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday and an inquest may be held at a later date. The Champaign County Coroner's Office and the Illinois State Police are investigating the death.

Traffic on I-74 was backed up in both directions near the site of the crash Sunday afternoon.
