A 24-year-old mother was killed and two children are hospitalized after a single car accident on Interstate 65 North early Tuesday.

Police said Ashley Parker’s 2003 Hyundai Elantra travelled off the roadway and struck a Tennessee Department of Transportation overhead sign pole around 5 a.m. near Wedgewood Avenue.

Rescue crews used the Jaws of Life to pull one of her children from the wreckage. A second child was also rescued from the car.

Both children, ages six months and 18 months, were secured in car seats and received only minor injuries. They were transported to Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.

It’s unknown if Parker of Chattanooga was wearing a seat belt due to the severe damage to the vehicle.

I-65 was closed for hours as crews worked to clear the scene.

There was no evidence of alcohol or drug involvement at the scene according to police.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Parker’s family is en route to Nashville to care for the children.
