New Bedford,MA : Two boys in serious condition after hit-and-run on July, Saturday 15th 2017

New Bedford police are looking for a driver who allegedly hit and seriously injured two children Saturday night.

Lt. Amos Melo confirmed to Eyewitness News that the 12-year-old boys were riding a moped in the area of Blackmer and South Second Streets around 8:55 p.m. when they were struck by a car.

The two boys were not wearing helmets and were seriously injured. The boys were brought to an area hospital following the crash. Lt. Melo did not have an update on their conditions Sunday.

A witness told Eyewitness News that one of the boys appeared to have a broken leg, and the other had a serious head injury. The witness said that the car dragged the scooter as it sped away from the scene of the crash.

Police said the vehicle, reportedly a silver or gray Acura, fled with heavy front-end damage.

The crash is still under investigation. An accident reconstruction team was called in to the scene to investigate. Anyone with information on the crash should call the New Bedford Police Department at 508-991-6350.
