Two people were injured in a two-vehicle crash on U.S. 21 on St. Helena Island late Tuesday morning.

A 63-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman were driving separate pickup trucks that collided “nearly head on” near Sea Island Parkway and Reunion Road shortly before noon, according to Lady’s Island-St. Helena Island Fire District spokesman Scott Harris. Both drivers were injured and transported to Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

The man had to be freed from his truck by firefighters and suffered some broken bones and other pain, Harris said. The woman was able to walk and her injuries were not clear before she was transported to the hospital. Both trucks had severe front-end damage.

Both lanes were initially blocked off after the accident, but one was reopened eventually opened to allow traffic from both sides to take turns coming though until both could be reopened, Harris said. The scene cleared after about an hour and a half.
