Toms River, NJ: Toms River Car Crashes Into Pole, Causes Power Outages on Saturday, July 18th 2015
An 18-year-old Toms River man man drove his car into a utility pole on Saturday, causing power outages in Toms River, police said.At 7:11 a.m., Andre Alexander was traveling south on Whitesville Road in a 2005 Ford Explorer. The vehicle left the roadway to the right and struck a utility pole at the intersection of Rivers Edge Drive, police said.Because of the crash, there was severe damage to the utility pole. This also caused extensive damage to the power grid transformers and resulted in a power surge and electric outages. Work crews have been on the scene and making repairs, police said.There is no estimated time on when the power will be restored or how many JCP&L customers are affected. Temporary detours are in place prohibiting traffic in both directions of Whitesville Road between Sunset Avenue and Stevens Road. Motorists should use Route 9 to avoid travel delays.Alexander was not injured as a result of the crash. He was arrested and charged with driving under the influence as well as reckless driving. Additional charges were filed as a result of the DWI while being under the legal drinking age.An unrelated power wire was also down across Route 37, causing traffic delays early Saturday. A wire became dislodged from the overhead supports and came to rest across Route 37 near the Garden State Parkway.Traffic is still able to flow east and west but there are delays due to there being only one passable lane. Officers and work crews are on the scene. There is no estimated time as to when the repairs will be completed.
