Bridgeport, CT : I-91 truck driver killed in 5-vehicle crash on Thursday, 25th August, 2016
A driver of a box truck was killed Thursday morning after his vehicle sideswipped two vehicles on southbound I-91 in New Haven. State Police said the accident involved five vehicles including a Fed-Ex tractor-trailer truck.
Joel Gemme, 38, of Enfield was killed in the crash. Two of the five other people were also injured, according state police.
According to the accident report, the Fed-Ex truck was traveling in the left of four lanes near Exit 4. Three other vehicles were traveling in the left center lane.
While Gemme was following behind the Fed-Ex truck, he sideswipped two of the vehicles in the center lane. After sideswipping the cars, his vehicle ran into the rear of the Fed-Ex truck. The impact caused Gemme’s box truck to lose its front tire, striking the first vehicle traveling in the center lane.
Gemme was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:28 a.m. by a paranedic. Two others were transported to Yale New Haven Hospital where they were evaulated for minor injuries.
Four of the five vehicles had to be towed from the scene.
The accident shut down the three left lanes between Exits 4 and 3. Traffic was backed up more than 3.5 miles.
