A 20-year-old man died in a crash Saturday evening on Interstate 275 after the left rear tire failed in the car he was driving.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, Gabriel A. Matthews, of Palm Harbor, was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier north on Interstate 275.
About 6:40 p.m., north of the Fourth Street N exit just before the Howard Frankland Bridge, the Cavalier's left rear tire failed, causing Matthews to lose control of the car. It spun into an outside shoulder, where it collided with a sign pole, troopers said.
Matthews, who was wearing his seatbelt, was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital, where he later died of his injuries.
