Big Island, VA : Three motorists injured in a three-vehicle wreck at Blue Ridge Parkway on Sunday, April 17th, 2016
A three-vehicle wreck on Milepost 68 of the Blue Ridge Parkway in Big Island sent three motorists to the hospital with injuries Sunday afternoon.
Big Island Volunteer Fire Department Chief Brandon Cocke, who was at the scene, said a group of motorcycles heading south on the parkway met another group of motorcycles heading north when two bikes from each collided just after 2 p.m. Sunday. A third motorcycle also was involved, Cocke said.
One of the drivers involved in the collision, who Cocke said had the most serious injuries, was flown by helicopter to Lynchburg General Hospital. A second driver with “significant” injuries and the other person involved in the wreck were each transported to the hospital, Cocke said.
The Amherst County Sheriff’s Office and Bedford County Sheriff’s Office blocked both ends of a bridge on the parkway as crews worked the scene, according to a Big Island Fire Company Facebook post Sunday.
Cocke said the three motorists were middle-aged men but he could not provide names or exact conditions. The Big Island Fire Department cleared the scene at about 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Cocke said.
