A man was killed in a two-vehicle wreck at the end of the West Hills Road exit ramp from I-40 eastbound around 11:00 p.m. Thursday. Police say 52-year-old David Gaston, Sr., of Powell, was driving his car down the ramp when it crashed with a van driven by a 17-year-old Knoxville woman. Upon impact, Gaston's vehicle hit a steel utility pole and the van went into a spin. Gaston was partially ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. Officers say he wasn't wearing a seat belt. The driver of the van was taken to U.T. Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. Gaston was a former KPD officer. He retired in October 2012 after serving 26 years with the department.
