Fort Smith, AR : Driver dies after ammunition truck catches fire near Mulberry on Wednesday, February 22nd 2017

A truck driver is dead after his tractor-trailer, carrying an estimated 40,000 pounds of ammunition, caught fire on I-40 near Mulberry on Wednesday afternoon.

The driver, whose identity is unknown at this stage of the investigation, was trapped in his vehicle, and died as a result of the fire, according to Liz Chapman, a spokeswoman for the Arkansas State Police. A portion of the interstate was closed Wednesday afternoon as crews waited for the blaze to die down in order to clear the scene.

The rural area surrounding the single-car accident was not evacuated, though traffic was being rerouted onto U.S. 64.
