Lafayette, IN : Daughter of former IU football coach Terry Hoeppner dies in crash on Saturday, 24th September 2016
The daughter of former Indiana University football coach Terry Hoeppner died in a vehicle accident Saturday morning.
Allison Hoeppner, 45, of Bloomington, was pronounced dead at the intersection of Ind. 37 and Old Ind. 37 South around midnight, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office said.
Hoeppner had attempted to turn her 2003 Subaru northbound onto Ind. 37 when her car was struck by a 2003 Prevost bus driven by 42-year-old Johnathan Brewer, of Haptonville, N.C., according to the Sherriff's Office.
An investigation determined that Hoeppner had the right of way, and Brewer had failed to stop at the traffic light.
While there was no evidence of impairment, police said, Brewer was transported to IU Health Bloomington to get blood drawn. The Hoeppner family has been closely associated with IU and its football program since 2004, when Terry Hoeppner was hired from Miami (Ohio) to be Indiana’s football coach.
During two seasons in Bloomington, Terry Hoeppner revived a tired fan base and a flagging program and authored wins over Kentucky, Illinois and a ranked Iowa team.
Terry Hoeppner died in June 2007 of complications from a brain tumor. His team won seven games and qualified for the Insight Bowl the next season, dedicating its performance to him.
Hoeppner’s wife, Jane, and family other family members have since maintained close ties to the university. Current IU football coach Kevin Wilson, who coached with Terry Hoeppner at Miami, often mentions his former colleague when talking about his time there.
The Indiana Department of Athletics honored Allison with a moment of silence prior to Saturday’s Indiana-Wake Forest game.
