A 22-year-old motorcyclist died Saturday afternoon in a crash in Lakeland.

According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, a 17-year-old driver in a Ford Explorer was heading eastbound on Ewell Road approaching County Line Road in Lakeland just after 4 p.m.

Meanwhile, Michael Bitto, of Mulberry was heading northbound on County Line Road approaching Ewell Road at the same time.

According to witnesses and evidence at the scene, the speeding Kawasaki went through a red light at County Line Road and struck the rear passenger side of the SUV.

Officials said the impact knocked Bitto through the rear window of the SUV.

Bitto, who was wearing a helmet, was declared dead at the scene.
An investigation is ongoing.

No charges are pending.
