Horry County, SC : Former Coastal Carolina football player dead after motorcycle crash in Myrtle Beach on Wednesday night, March 2, 2016

A Conway man, a former Coastal Carolina University football player, was killed in a motorcycle crash late Wednesday night in Myrtle Beach.

Anthony Frye, 27, of the Conway area died from trauma suffered in the crash that occurred about 10:45 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of U.S. 501 and Robert Grissom Parkway, according to Darris Fowler, deputy coroner with Horry County.

Frye was a running back for Coastal in 2008 and 2010, according to CCU’s letterman list. Frye was a sophomore political science major, according to university documents.

He rushed for 62 yards in 15 attempts in 2008 while catching four passes for 17 yards, and rushed for 15 yards and one touchdown in seven carries in 2010. Frye is originally from Opelika, Ala., and played one season at the University of the Cumberlands in Williamsburg, Ky.

Former CCU wide receiver Marquel Willis said he spent a lot of time with Frye when they were teammates.

“I got that phone call this morning,” Willis said, choking up. “He was a great guy. He made it out of a lot of tough situations.”

Frye was heading south on U.S. 501 when he collided with the driver of a sports utility vehicle that was trying to make a left on Robert Grissom Parkway, police said.

Frye was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, Fowler said. He was taken to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center where he died from his crash injuries.

Myrtle Beach police are investigating the crash.

“He worked his butt off on and off the field just to be a better person and better man,” Willis said. “He was a good teammate, good friend. I kind of saw him as a brother. We were definitely family.”
