Chandler Montell Grant of North Main Street in Statesboro is charged with speeding, fleeing/attempt to elude, two counts of stop sign violation, reckless driving and theft by receiving stolen property, said Candler County Sheriff’s Capt. Justin Wells.
Candler County Sheriff’s Deputy Rhett Kelly spotted the speeding Dodge Charger around 4:30 p.m. Friday on Interstate 16 near the 101 mile marker, and tried to perform a traffic stop. When the driver, later identified as Grant, 19, refused to stop, the chase led into Bulloch County and then into Evans County after Grant turned towards Claxton on Hwy. 301 South, Wells said.
The chase led law enforcement – Bulloch and Evans county sheriff’s deputies, Georgia State patrol troopers and Claxton police, as well as Candler County Sheriff’s deputies – into Claxton, where Grant was found crashed into woods near West James Street and Gregory Street, he said.
Grant was airlifted to a Savannah hospital, where he was medically cleared and returned to the Candler County Jail, where he remains as the investigation continues. Further charges as well as arrests are possible, Wells said.
