A Tucson man is hospitalized in critical condition after driving the wrong way on Interstate 10 and colliding head-on with a commercial big rig near Eloy.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety says the accident occurred about 2:30 a.m. Thursday.

It closed the eastbound lanes of the freeway for hours as crews cleaned up spilled diesel fuel.

DPS officials say the 55-year-old wrong-way driver was flown by helicopter to a Phoenix hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The man's name hasn't been released.

Authorities say impairment is suspected in the crash.

DPS officials say the 52-year-old Phoenix man who was driving the commercial truck-tractor and semi-trailer escaped injury.
