A Spring Lake man has been charged with driving while impaired after a wreck Saturday on N.C. 87 in Harnett County that killed the passenger in his car, the N.C. Highway Patrol said.
The wreck happened at 7:05 p.m. about six miles north of Spring Lake near N.C. 24, according to a report filed by Trooper C.S. Carter.
James Steven Haney II, 21, of the 6500 block of Overhills Road, driving a 1994 Nissan Sentra, was traveling south at a high rate of speed, the report said.
The Sentra sideswiped a southbound 2011 Honda Odyssey minivan driven by William Hassell Wilson, 69, of Penhook, Virginia.
The Sentra continued going south and ran off the right side of the road, crossed the southbound entrance ramp from N.C. 24, overturned into a wood-line, hitting several trees.
Haney and his passenger, Russell Dan Jett Jr., 32, of the 200 block of Hoover Road in Sanford, were thrown from the vehicle, the report said.
Jett was pronounced dead at the scene.
Haney was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. He was not listed Monday as a patient.
Wilson and a passenger in his vehicle were not hurt.
Haney also was charged with careless and reckless driving.
