LAKE WALES, FL : Vehicle crashes in Lake Wales parking lot after driver has medical episode on Tuesday, November 15th 2016
A 64-year-old Lake Wales man is in critical condition after a medical episode caused him suddenly to accelerate and lose control of his vehicle Tuesday, crashing through two parking lots in downtown Lake Wales, police reported.
Brent Kyrk was unresponsive at the scene and flown to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center for treatment, said Deputy Chief Troy Schulze of the Lake Wales Police Department.
About 2 p.m., officers arrived at the crash, which occurred in the parking lot of a small plaza at 100 W. Stuart Ave., where they found "substantial damage" and a single-vehicle crash.
The incident began when Kyrk was driving his 2013 Ford Fusion on West Park Avenue. When he suffered the medical episode, he drove the car into the parking lot of 29 W. Park Ave. and accelerated at a high rate of speed, Schulze said.
The vehicle went across the parking lot, across West Stuart Avenue over the sidewalk, through a row of small bushes, and into a parking lot of 100 W. Stuart Ave., where he hit a curb, a decorative light post and a palm tree before rolling the car over one full rotation, reports said.
The vehicle came to rest right side up, Schulze said.
No other vehicles or pedestrians were involved in the crash.
Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to call Officer Mary Jerome at 863-678-4223, Ext. 521.
The investigation is ongoing.
