Jefferson County, AL : Woman killed after pickup truck head-on collision Jefferson County on Friday January 29 2016
Authorities today identified a woman who was killed in a Saturday head-collision that also injured two of her children and the driver of the other vehicle.
The Jefferson County Coroner's Office today identified the victim as Tabitha Smitherman. She was 27.
The crash happened at 11:30 a.m. Saturday on Birmingport Road near Amanda Lane in Sylvan Springs. Smitherman was driving a 2013 Jeep Patriot south on Birmingport Road when her SUV collided head-on with a 2016 Dodge pickup truck.
The impact of the crash sent Smitherman's Jeep into a small, dry ravine. The pickup truck flipped onto its side. Smitherman was pronounced dead on the scene at 11:55 a.m. Her two sons, ages 2 and 3, were taken to Children's of Alabama with serious injuries. Both were in child safety seats, and Smitherman was wearing her seatbelt.
The driver of the pickup truck, 32-year-old Gordon Brooks, was airlifted to UAB Hospital with critical injuries. He was listed in fair condition today, according to a hospital spokeswoman.
Authorities have not yet said which vehicle crossed the center lane. The crash remains under investigation by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. Chief Deputy Randy Christian said today the findings will be presented to the District Attorney's Office to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed.
