Monroe, NC : One killed when truck overturns on deputy’s car in Monroe on Wednesday morning, November 19, 2014
A Union County Sheriff's Deputy was killed Wednesday morning when a tractor-trailer landed on top of a patrol car along a major highway.
The Union County Sheriff's Office says Sgt. Jeffrey Greene is the deputy who died in the crash on U.S. 74.
The collision happened along US Highway 74 and S. Sutherland Avenue around 7 a.m. Wednesday in Monroe.
Highway patrol said troopers took the driver, Eddie Weeks, of the semi to the hospital. He was later charged with misdemeanor death by vehicle.
It was a very difficult day for the family, friends, and co-workers of Union County deputy Sergeant Jeffrey Green.
"The fact that it was one of our own made it very very painful," said Deputy Chief Ben Bailey of the Union County Sheriff's Office.
The Union County Sheriff's office did not lead the investigation into what killed Greene. State Highway Patrol says it involved four vehicles. Three of the vehicles: a tanker truck, another car and Greene's patrol car were waiting to turn on Sutherland Avenue.
"There was another tractor trailer that was also traveling west coming down 74 for whatever reason we're still investigating that he didn't see and didn't stop in time and swerved and hit this 18 wheeler a tanker truck," said Sergeant Mark Leach of NC Highway Patrol.
The semi jack knifed and crushed Greene and his patrol car underneath it.
"The truck was on top of the deputy's car it took a while to get him out of there," Leach said.
Leach said everyone stopped and prayed for Greene after he was taken out of the car.
"That moment after we were able to remove him from the crash site that was our opportunity to acknowledge him for his service to us and to the people of this county. And we took a moment to do that," said Bailey, "He is survived by his wife April and children, Nicole and Allison, and five grandchildren."
A deputy sheriff will be with Greene's family. Funeral arrangements have not been made.
