Elyria, OH : Two critically injured after a car overturned in front of the police station early Monday, January 2, 2017
Three people were hospitalized early Monday after a car overturned on West Avenue in front of the police station.
The Ohio Highway Patrol said a trooper was attempting to pull over a 2006 Chevrolet HHR for a traffic violation while it was traveling southbound on Lake Avenue at about 3:12 a.m. The driver of the car failed to negotiate a curve, striking a curb and causing the car to overturn.
The Elyria Fire Department was called to help lift the car because the 18-year-old driver had his head and arm pinned under the car. He was taken to MetroHealth Medical Center in Cleveland where he was listed in critical condition.
A 15-year-old passenger who was thrown from the vehicle was taken to Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital where she also was listed in critical condition.
Troopers said a third person, a male whose age was not given, was taken to University Hospitals Elyria Medical Center and was listed in stable condition.
None of the people involved in the accident was wearing a seat belt, and speed is believed to be a factor in the crash. The investigation is ongoing and it is unclear if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash, the patrol said.
The patrol said the names of the victims would be released later.
