Bouquet Canyon, CA : 19-year-old Leona Valley woman killed in car crash on Monday January 4 2016.
Bouquet Canyon, California
A 19-year-old Leona Valley woman on her way to school Monday morning was killed when her car hit an oak tree and plunged 20 feet down a ravine off Bouquet Canyon Road in Saugus.
Elena L. Kramer, a student at Glendale Community College, was found dead at the scene, said Lt. Fred Corral of the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Department.
Her white Ford Mustang ran off the road shortly before 8:30 a.m. in the 34900 block of Bouquet Canyon Road, said fire Inspector Randall Wright. The location is about 4 miles north of Cavi at the Big Oaks, the former Big Oaks Lodge, and 2 miles south of Spunky Canyon Road.
She was driving southbound on Bouquet,” California Highway Patrol Officer Jose Alhumada told The Signal at the scene. “We don’t know how fast she was going but, somehow, she lost control of the vehicle.
The right (passenger) side of the car hit the tree,” he said. “She was the sole occupant, and there were no other vehicles involved that we know of.”
The impact itself literally goes all the way from the passenger side to the driver’s side,” Alhumada said. “So she died on impact, most likely.”
She was 19 years old, on her way to school.”
Kramer’s parents arrived at the crash site shortly after it happened, one CHP officer said. “It’s terrible, just terrible,” he said. “For a parent, it really strikes home.”
The car, a 1999 convertible Mustang, came to rest in Bouquet Creek between the road and a cluster of cabin-style homes on the east bank.
Although at least one resident reported hearing the crash, there were no witnesses, Alhumada said.
CHP officers marked the point of impact on the trunk of an oak tree. At one point, one of the officers plucked a softball helmet from broken glass around the tree, believing it belonged to the victim.
Investigators with the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Department arrived at the scene shortly after 11 a.m. to remove the young woman’s body.
A woman who said she was a Bouquet Canyon resident complained to a CHP officer at the scene about safety on the winding canyon road that links the Santa Clarita Valley to points north, including Leona Valley.
If there had been a guardrail, that would have likely saved her life,” one CHP officer told her.
About 10 feet from the oak tree with which the Mustang collided was a white roadside cross with the initials “CJR” marking the spot where 16-year-old Christopher James Rodriguez of Palmdale died after the car he was in also hit a tree on Aug. 22.
Rodriguez was a passenger in the front seat of a 1990 Mazda Miata, according to a CHP report released at the time by Acting Sgt. Chris Cabral of the Newhall Station. Cabral identified the driver of the Miata as Nicholas Rodriguez, 22, of Palmdale,
For an unknown reason, Rodriguez lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle spun in a rotational manner and the right side of the Miata struck a tree bordering the roadway.
