West New York, NJ : Jersey City man dead in a two-car crash on Hillside Road/Defino Way in West New York on Sunday, December 7, 2014
West New York, New Jersey
An early morning crash this weekend left a Jersey City man dead, officials said.
Hudson County Sheriff Frank X. Schillari said emergency responders were called to the scene of the accident on Hillside Road/Defino Way around 2:20 a.m. on Saturday.
Fernando Tlatelpa, 27 of Jersey City, was heading eastbound on the road when he lost control of vehicle, crossed over double yellow lines and collided with a 2008 Silver Toyota Highlander, Schillari said.
Tlatelpa's 2002 Silver Acura then went through a fence and into the mountainside, Schillari said in a statement. Tlatelpa was extricated from the car and taken to Jersey City Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, according to Schillari.
The condition of the 33-year-old Clifton woman who was driving the Toyota Highlander was not immediately available.
Schillari's statement said preliminary findings show that speed, weather conditions and alcohol contributed to the crash.
"The investigation is ongoing and blood samples of both drivers are being sent to the lab for analysis," the statement said. "Investigators are also trying to determine the speeds of each vehicle."
