Morton, MN : One dead, seven injured in Renville County crash on Friday night, November 18, 2016
A Renville County woman died and seven people were injured Friday night in a two-vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 71 near Morton.
The State Patrol says 68-year-old Joann Dehncke, of Morton, died in the crash in the southern part of Renville County. It was the third fatal crash statewide Friday during a strong snowstorm that swept through the state.
Around 7:20 p.m., Dehncke had been driving a 2013 Ford Escape northbound on Highway 71. At the same time, 25-year-old Ta Ku was driving a 2007 Ford F-150 south on the same road.
The Patrol says road conditions were icy when Ku lost control of the Ford F-150, crossed the centerline, and struck Dehncke’s Ford Escape head on.
Dehncke was pronounced dead at the scene. Ku and her passengers Ka Lah, 32, Mawmaw Lay, 27, Lah T. Way, 7, Lar T. Way, 9, La T. Way, 5, and Dah L. Leh, 3, all of St. Paul, were transported to Redwood Area Hospital in Redwood Falls with non-life threatening injuries.
Both vehicles were totalled in the crash on the two-lane highway. The Patrol said alcohol was not a factor. The Fairfax Police Department assisted the State Patrol on the scene.
