A male driver is dead after a vehicle - sought by police - crashed into the woods off the Merritt Parkway in Fairfield late Monday night.
State Police Trooper Kelly Grant said the vehicle “was reported to have been involved in an evading crash in Stratford earlier in night after striking the personal vehicle of an off-duty trooper.”
The southbound crash happened near Exit 46 near the Fairfield/Trumbull town line around 11:25 p.m.
According to the an accident summary by State Police Trooper Joseph Longo, the identity of the man killed in the crash remains “unknown.”
Grant said the crashed vehicle was located by Trumbull police “who assisted in search for evading vehicle.”
It’s unclear whether the vehicle was being pursued by police before it crashed into the woods.
Stratford Police were not involved in a pursuit of the car, according to spokesman Capt. Frank Eannotti.
The car, a 2015 Chrysler 200, model is owned by Ari Rent a Car in Linden, N.J.
According to the accident report, at about 11:33 p.m., the car was traveling southbound on the Merritt Parkway and for “unknown reasons,” it left the travel portion of the road and entered onto the Exit 46 off ramp.
The car then “continued to travel straight, failing to negotiate the right curvature of the ramp and then traveled down a slight embankment and struck a tree along the driver’s side of the vehicle.”
State Police said the crash remains under investigation.
