VICTORVILLE, CA : Two Adelanto children killed in crash on Saturday, February 18th 2017

Two Adelanto children were killed and five others were injured in a two-vehicle crash at Mojave Drive and Amethyst Road on Saturday night, authorities said.

The incident was reported at roughly 8:37 p.m.

The two children, identified Sunday by the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner's office as Pedro Basua Jr., 12, and Teresa Basua, 10, were pronounced dead at the scene at 8:45 p.m.

Four adults and a boy were taken to a local hospital with moderate to minor injuries, San Bernardino County Sheriff's officials said in a statement Sunday.

The incident involved a 2003 Hyundai Elantra carrying Pedro Basua Jr., Teresa Basua and an 11-year-old boy, who were rear seat passengers, and two adults in the front.

Three 18-year-olds were in the second vehicle, a 1996 Ford Taurus.

The Taurus was traveling eastbound on Mojave Drive, approaching the intersection at Amethyst Road when the Elantra, traveling northbound on Amethyst, attempted to make a left turn onto Mojave "in front of the path of the" Taurus, authorities said.

"The front of the Taurus collided with the driver's side of the Elantra when both vehicles attempted to cross the intersection," authorities said.

The Elantra's two front-seat passengers, a 35-year-old man and 38-year-old woman, and the 11-year-old boy in the backseat, were taken to a local hospital with moderate injuries.

Two of the teenagers in the Taurus were taken to a local hospital with moderate to minor injuries. The front passenger was picked up at the scene by family, authorities said.

"The roadway was closed for several hours and reopened at approximately 6 a.m.," sheriff's spokeswoman Jodi Miller said in an email.

The Sheriff's Major Accident Investigation Team is handling the investigation. Anyone with information is requested to call Deputy Charles Wallace or Deputy Amir Awad at 760-241-2911.
