Speedway,IN : Speedway family displaced after driver crashes into home on December, Thursday 14th 2017

Police are trying to figure out why a man drove away from police and crashed into a Speedway home Thursday morning, displacing a family of four.

A couple inside the home wasn’t hurt, and medics took the driver to the hospital in serious condition.

Someone called police around 8 a.m., saying a driver might be asleep behind the wheel at a stoplight at 30th Street and Moeller Road. Officers said he drove off after they knocked on his window. Police said they didn’t chase him, but they did follow him until he crashed into Steve Russell’s house, breaking through a brick wall.

“The car went all the way inside the house and partly into the basement. It was a miracle that it went into an unoccupied room,” Russell said.

Detectives said they don’t know why the driver took off. The man lost control of the car, crashed and climbed out the back.

Russell, who had dropped his kids off at school about a half hour earlier, said the driver was bleeding.

“The most important thing is my kids are fine and, for the moment, have no idea any of this has happened,” Russell said.

Investigators said the car first hit another home, knocking off part of a gutter. The Indianapolis Fire Department removed the car later in the day.

Firefighters told the Russells they’ll have to stay somewhere else for now.

“The rate of speed that this car was traveling — it did a number on this structure,” IFD Battalion Chief Rita Reith said.
