A Massachusetts police officer is in critical condition after a car crash involving a teenager who was racing, officials said.
Somerville Police Officer Louis Remigio, who lives in Tewksbury, was off-duty when he was badly injured in the crash on Interstate 95 South in North Hampton. He was taken to Portsmouth Regional Hospital, a Somerville spokeswoman said.New Hampshire State Police said the crash was reported around 9:26 a.m.
Witnesses told investigators they saw a 2013 Mercedes C300 racing other vehicles on the northbound side, state police said. At mile marker 8.8, the Mercedes abruptly crossed over to the southbound side and collided head-on with Remigio's Harley Davidson motorcycle.
State police said the Mercedes was driven by Michael Ricci, 18, of Burlington, Mass.
A 2009 Subaru Legacy could not stop in time and rear-ended the Mercedes, state police said. The 63-year-old driver, John Bramford, and 61-year-old passenger, Jaclyn Bramford, were both injured.
The couple from Wells, Maine suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Debris from the crash caused damage to two other vehicles, but the drivers were not hurt, state police said.
Ricci, who was not injured, was arrested for felony reckless conduct. State police said he is being held on $10,000 cash bail at the Rockingham County Jail.
The interstate was closed for several hours in North Hampton as Police investigated and cleaned up the scene.
