LANTANA, FL : SUV crashes into Lantana church, disrupting Sunday service on Sunday, 25th September 2016
A crash on Lantana Road sent an SUV careening into the front of First Baptist Church of Lantana on Sunday morning as more than 80 people were gathered inside for services.
The driver of the gold SUV was taken to the hospital, but no one inside the church was injured in the crash, which occurred just after 11 a.m., church officials said. The crash jolted churchgoers and caused electricity in the building to go out, church officials said. The SUV landed on top of the church’s outdoor air-conditioning unit.
A gas leak coming from the vehicle also filled the building with fumes, church leaders said.
“It blew the power to the church right in the middle of John 15:3,” said Tracy Frye, a Deacon at the church. “It was a little shocking. Luckily no one got hurt.”
Art Villarreal, who is also a deacon at the church, said the crash sounded like “thunder” and a power “transformer that blew.”
Church officials were still trying to determine the how much damage was caused to the building as a result of the crash.
