Belmont ,NC : 87-year-old Clinton Collins Bell killed after crashing into stopped tractor-trailer on Tuesday ,August 4th 2015

One person was killed in a vehicle accident on Interstate-85 Tuesday evening, according to Belmont Police.

The crash happened just before 8:30 p.m. on southbound I-85 near exit 23, the McAdenville exit.

Police said 87-year-old Clinton Collins Bell struck the rear-end of a tractor trailer. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A witness told police the vehicle was in the lane closest to the wall when it suddenly went across three right lanes and struck the back of the stopped tractor-trailer.

Bell was the only person in the vehicle that struck the tractor trailer, which was stopped because of mechanical problems. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not in the truck when the accident happened and was not injured.

Troopers guided traffic around the scene while crews investigated the incident.

Officials have not said what may have caused the car to suddenly travel across the three lanes.
