Auburn, KS : Washburn Rural student dies in a three-vehicle wreck at at S.W. 61st and Auburn on Tuesday afternoon, February 10, 2015
A 17-year-old Washburn Rural High School student died Tuesday afternoon after the car in which he was riding crashed at S.W. 61st and Auburn Road.
Shawnee County sheriff’s Sgt. Brad Jones said the teenager, whose name wasn’t released because of his age, died at a hospital. He was the passenger in a dark blue Ford Mustang driven by his stepbrother, Andrew Slack, 19.
Jones said Slack was taken to The University of Kansas Medical Center for treatment of life-threatening injuries.
The 2001 Mustang collided with a silver 2006 Chevrolet Impala driven by Mary Rickel, 61, about 3 p.m. at the intersection, which is less than 3 miles from the school.
“The first officers who arrived found three vehicles that had been damaged as a result of this pretty traumatic crash,” Shawnee County Sheriff Herman Jones said.
He said the impact of the collision between the Impala and the Mustang pushed the cars into a stationary 2002 Green Jeep Liberty. The driver of that car, Scott Gilchrist, 56, refused treatment at the scene.
Rickel was taken to Stormont-Vail by American Medical Response ambulance with injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening, according to a news release.
After speaking with witnesses and gathering preliminary information, Sheriff Jones said the Mustang was traveling west near the intersection “at a high rate of speed and it had passed vehicles.”
After failing to stop at a red light, he said, the Mustang struck the Impala, which was southbound at the time.
The investigation is ongoing and any possible charges stemming from the incident are pending, according to Jones.
