Citrus Springs, FL : 17-year-old Jett Lajoi injured after crashes into school bus on Monday afternoon ,May 18th 2015

No children were hospitalized when the school bus they were riding got hit by a car Monday afternoon at a Citrus Springs intersection.

According to Citrus County Sheriff’s Office and Florida Highway Patrol officials on scene at the intersection of North Darlington Drive and West Hummingbird Drive, the school bus being driven by 41-year-old Wanda Dentici was transporting 28 students from Central Ridge Elementary School.

As the bus was traveling west on West Hummingbird Drive approaching the intersection, a car driven north on North Darlington Drive by 17-year-old Jett Lajoi ran a stop sign at high speed and collided with the bus on its left-rear bumper, officials said.

Two children had minor injuries, but weren’t sent to a hospital. The driver of the car, however, was sent to Ocala Regional with serious injuries.

Eric Seeger was one of several parents who found out about the crash and came rushing to get their kids.

“I was just asking, ‘Where’s it at, and how bad is it?’” Seeger said of hearing about the crash from a neighbor.

His daughter Emma, who was in the bus, said the crash was like hearing a “boom.”

“Some people were hurt,” the 7-year-old said. “The bus had lost some pieces.”

Damage to the bus’s bumper was minor, compared to damage to the car.

“That’s the safest mode of transportation,” said Kenny Blocker, Citrus School District assistant superintendent in charge of student buses. “The bus driver did a great job taking care of the kids.”

Another bus came by to take about six students home who weren’t picked up by parents, officials said.
