Kokomo,IN : Two boys hospitalized following bike, car accident on August, Sunday 13th 2017

Two boys were hospitalized Sunday morning after being struck by a car while riding on a single bike down the middle of the street, according to a Kokomo Police Department accident report.

The accident happened at around 1:46 a.m., according to the report, and one of the boys told officers they were “riding in the middle of the street and were swerving across the lanes of traffic.”

The boys were brothers, the report says, with a 14-year-old peddling and his 11-year-old brother riding in front of him on the bike’s handlebars.

An officer who was driving down Washington Street, near the Madison Street intersection, noted in the report that he saw a dark figure in the road in front of him. As he neared the dark figure, he realized it was a bike that didn’t appear to have any lights or reflectors that would make it visible to traffic.

As the officer passed by the bike, he saw it was being ridden by two boys, and the officer made a U-turn to go back to the boys and address the dangerous situation.

Before the officer reached them again, however, they were struck by a 2016 Toyota Corolla, driven by Shauna Connolly, 37, Kokomo. Connolly told officers she was driving northbound on Washington Street, near the Madison Street intersection. She did not see anything in the roadway, according to the report, but suddenly her windshield was struck and subsequently broken.

Connolly didn’t know what she had hit until she saw the officer’s emergency lights turn on, she told police, and she exited her car along with her passenger and saw the bike and the boys.

The 14-year-old “went up over the vehicle” according to the report, and both boys landed in the roadway.

The boys’ mother, Trianna Mulvaney, told the Tribune that the boys were staying with a relative, and were given permission by the relative to buy soda from a nearby store. It was the 14-year-old’s birthday, she said.

Medics were contacted at the scene, and the boys were taken to St. Vincent Kokomo for treatment. Mulvaney told the Tribune that the 14-year-old was then transferred to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis for further treatment. He was released Monday.

Mulvaney added that it was a scary situation, especially when KPD arrived at their residence at 2 a.m. Because of the time, she said, she knew it wasn't good news.

Mulvaney praised hospital staff, in particular an instance at Riley with her 14-year-old son.

“Today before he was released, one of the nurses came to him and gave him a $25 Target gift card and a deck of Uno cards and said ‘happy birthday’ to him, because he spent the day in the hospital," Mulvaney said.

Connolly was cited for driving with a suspended license.
