Austin,TX : 2 dead, one injured in head-on crash on Thursday, 27th October 2016
Two men died and another person was airlifted to a local hospital following a head-on crash Thursday morning on US highway 87 near the Canadian River.
At approximately 6:30 a.m. a 2004 Dodge pick-up truck driven by Barry Proffitt, 61, of Amarillo, collided with a southbound 2001 Ford pick-up truck driven by Jack Jaeger, 49, of Garden City, Kan., when it crossed over the center median and into the northbound lane, Texas Department of Public Safety reported.
Following the head-on collision between the two trucks, Jaeger’s vehicle was engulfed in flames, Potter County Fire Department responded to the scene to extinguish the flames, DPS officials said.
Proffitt and Jaeger were both pronounced dead at the scene by Potter County Justice of the Peace Debbie Horn.
Barrett Coon, 24, of Amarillo, a passenger in Proffitt’s truck, was airlifted to an Amarillo hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.
Texas Department of Transportation officials were also on scene to divert traffic to southbound lanes while clean-up and an investigation was in progress. As of noon Thursday, DPS said all lanes were open again.
DPS officials were unsure why Jaeger crossed the center median and the crash is under investigation.
Road conditions were dry at the time of the accident and no other cars were involved.
