Santa Rosa Beach,FL : Man seriously hurt in Mid-Bay Bridge crash on February, Thursday 15th 2018
Santa Rosa Beach, Florida
A Niceville man who fell asleep at the wheel crossed into the oncoming lane of travel and crashed into a Mack truck on the Mid-Bay Bridge Thursday morning.
According to a Florida Highway Patrol press release, 27-year-old Zachariah Howard was driving a 2000 Ford Ranger pickup north on the bridge when he fell asleep and crossed into the southbond lane just after 11:30 a.m.
When the pickup partially crossed over the center line, it traveled into the path of a 2017 Mack truck driven by Christopher McDaniel, 44, of DeFuniak Springs.
Following the collision, the pickup traveled back across the northbound lane and onto the paved east shoulder where the front of the Ranger struck the concrete bridge face.
As a result of that collision, the pickup then careened off the bridge face and came to a final rest partially on the northbound lane of travel and partially on the southbound lane of travel, facing a northerly direction.
Howard was seriously injured in the crash, though the FHP report did not note the hospital he is currently being treated at. McDaniel did not suffer any injuries.
FHP reported that Howard was cited for failure to use due care.
