A tractor-trailer driver was killed and two Franklin County residents were injured Thursday morning when his truck crashed into three vehicles on Interstate 81, causing a six-vehicle chain-reaction accident, Pennsylvania State Police said.
The crash, which was reported at 7:40 a.m., snarled traffic on the interstate for at least six hours, state police said.
Killed was 54-year-old Ismael Medina of Laredo, Texas, state police said.
All the vehicles were traveling north in the left lane when the crash occurred, police said.
Medina was driving a 2005 Freightliner in the area of mile post 45 in South Middleton Township when he failed to see traffic slowed and stopped in front of him, police said.
The tractor-trailer ran into the rear of a 2016 Mazda 6 being driven by Sean Kane, 24, of Carlisle, Pa., police said. Kane's car then went into the median, police said.
The tractor-trailer continued north, striking a 2006 Mazda 3 being driven by 34-year-old Kyle Chiaverni of Fayetteville, police said. Chiaverni's car was also forced into the median, police said.
Medina's rig then struck a 2004 Nissan 350Z being driven by Justin Horst, 37, of Shippensburg, police said. After striking Horst's car, the tractor-trailer veered into the median and rolled on its right side, police said.
Horst's car was pushed into the rear of a 2012 Chevrolet Traverse being driven by Michaelann Moser, 50, of Chambersburg, police said.
Moser's vehicle was pushed into the rear of a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado, being driven by James Leid, 35, of Shippensburg, police said.
Medina was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The other drivers were taken to various hospitals, police said.
