Southwest Harbor ,ME: One Woman killed after single-car crash on Route 102 Saturday ,August 1st 2015

A Massachusetts woman died Saturday afternoon when the vehicle she was riding in went off Route 102 and rolled over, according to local police.

The woman was sitting in the backseat of the vehicle and was not wearing a seatbelt when the car crashed around 2:45 p.m. near of the parking lot for St. Saveur Mountain in Acadia National Park, interim police chief Mike Miller said Saturday evening.

The woman, Arthi Nandhakumar, 24, of Lowell, Massachusetts, was partially ejected through the sunroof of the vehicle and was declared dead at the scene, he said. The woman’s husband, who was driving the vehicle, and their five-month old son survived with minor injuries.

Miller said the husband, Pradeep Mohanraj, 31, was driving the 2013 BMW sedan north on Route 102 when a small animal ran into the roadway. Mohanraj swerved to avoid the animal, which he later told police may have been a rabbit, and lost control of the car.

Mohanraj was wearing a seatbelt and the infant son was strapped into a baby seat that was secured in the back seat, Miller said. The father and his son were transported by Southwest Harbor/Tremont Ambulance to Mount Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor, where they were treated for bumps and bruises and released, the chief said.

The road was closed for about three hours while police and emergency personnel tended to the family and dealt with the accident scene, according to Miller. With assistance from Mount Desert Police Department, traffic between Southwest Harbor and Somesville was redirected through Pretty Marsh while Route 102 was closed.
